Back In The Day

I remember as a child, when I went with my grandparents to the neighborhood pharmacy, that they would let me pick out a model from the very small selection of model cars and trucks in the store. Here's one of those models purchased at the old Jacksonville Pharmacy.

Later, I was able to purchase models on my own. There were some great little hobby shops  in the area back then. Yorktowne Hobby Shop in Cockeysville, Maryland was always one of my favorites. I am delighted that they are still in business today. I could always count on finding a great selection of models and supplies at Lyold's in Towson and Family Hobbies in Arbutus, Maryland, but they are no longer around. They continue to be missed by many modeler's today. Those were the days before the Internet and so many big discount stores, which had a part in putting many of the family owned hobby shops out of business! Then, what made matters worse for myself and my fellow modelers, is that a few years ago the big discount stores stopped carrying models all together. This has left us with few local sources for models and supplies. Now, all we have left are the memories of  the good times and the great friendships that were made back then.
